Good morning County.
I know that many of us have spent a very reflective weekend after hearing the news of the unspeakable tragedy out of Humboldt, Saskatchewan. As someone who has spent many, many hours travelling with young people on any number of occasions, this horrifying incident has touched me deeply. The loss of even one young person is one too many, but the sheer magnitude of this devastating accident has, I am sure, given many of us more than a moment’s pause over the past few days. A GoFundMe page has been set up for the families of the victims, and if you are interested in finding out more, follow this link.
This weekend, your local president had an opportunity to attend the annual Local President’s conference, which allows all the local presidents to bring forward issues that arise from across the province. It is quite interesting to hear all the perspectives and, as well, to note the similarities in the concerns raised. Key items of discussion included how to deal with the new reality facing administrators, clarifying the role of the local presidents, and communicating with the membership. There was also some keen interest expressed by the local leadership in receiving more training on JOHS, as well as a very lively discussion on the value of our association with the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour. All told, an exceptional day of discussion and networking.
The countdown is on to our Provincial Executive Elections, and we have three great candidates vying for the position. If you wish to find out more about them individually, please check out our candidates page. All three will be addressing the local on Wednesday night at our general meeting at the legion in Lower Sackville. (6:00 for a 6:30 start)
For those of you who have someone in your family graduating this year, your student may be eligible to receive a Halifax County Local Bursary from your local. If you are interested, click here, but a word of caution. Please ensure you read all the details carefully before you submit the form. Due to our auditing process, we must stick closely to the guidelines as indicated.
That’s it for today, County. Take care of yourself this week.
