Check-In, Monday, May 7th

Good Morning, County. Happy Monday.

Well, another Annual Council has come and gone. This weekend was again filled with lots of lively debate and great networking opportunities. I want to thank all the Halifax County Delegates who gave up their weekend to do the business of council. We had a number of our members put their names forward for positions, and congratulations to Shelley Luddington on being appointed as a representative for the Canadian Teachers Federation.

The weekend also featured the NSTU candidate speeches and a question and answer session. NSTU central office is currently in the process of posting this on the NSTU website, and all members should be able to view the event once it is up.

We also had four members of our local receive Local service awards. A very special congratulations to Meg Ferguson, Phil Goora, Karen Hudson and Terry Ryan.

On a point of personal privilege, a special acknowledgement  to Mona MacNeil and her Social Wellness Committee for the exceptional job they did this weekend. There are a lot of moving parts at council, and that this weekend went as smoothly as it did is a testament to all their hard work.

As you may already know, HRCE has pushed back the staffing timelines for this year. This is not entirely unheard of, as staffing can not be done until budgets are finalized, and things have been delayed this year. We have not yet been given the dates for the new deadlines, but have been assured that HRCE is doing everything possible to get this first round underway as quickly as possible. More information should be coming out to schools shortly.

Finally, just want to remind you that nominations for the Halifax County Inspire Awards are now open. These awards are an opportunity for you to acknowledge a Halifax County member who has gone above and beyond. Nominating someone is simple, and member’s names can be put forth for showing exemplary Educational Leadership, Mentorship, Community Involvement, Passion for (or excellence in), Teaching. Nominations close on May 28th, and those selected (and their guests) will be invited to attended a ceremony on the evening of June 21st. To find out more, simply email me at with the subject line “Inspire”.

That is all for this week. Have a great one and try to enjoy the improving weather.
