Good morning County, Happy Monday.

Today marks a very important day. Today, in partnership with Dartmouth and Halifax City, we are officially launching the Guarding Minds at Work Survey.

Over the past few years, mental health practitioners have become increasingly aware of the impact of the work place environment on the workers. Stresses of the job, not enough time, managing demands all place a tremendous burden on people in the work-force. If left unchecked, this can lead to people having to take extended time off work. In fact, by some accounts, mental health problems are the fastest rising cause for both short and long term disabilities in our country.

A few years back, insurance giant Great-West Life partnered with the Center for Applied Research in Mental Health and Addiction (CARMHA) to develop a tool to measure how well employers were doing in looking out for the psychological health of their employees, as per the The National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace. The tool they developed (Guarding Minds at Work) takes metrics in 13 separate verticals of psychological wellness as it pertains to the workplace.

Now, although the adoption of this standard is completely voluntary, it is becoming more and more common. In fact, our own government recently opened an office of Workplace Mental Health, which has following the new standard as one of their main priorities.

To date, as far as we can ascertain, no one has ever taken a metric of overall psychological health and wellness of teachers.

Our goal in sending out this survey is to essentially see how our members are doing, and to hopefully receive some data to identify areas of psychological risk in our workplace, as well as areas where we are doing well. The secondary goal, of course, is to call attention to areas of need, and hopefully start the long-overdue conversation around teacher mental wellness.

We have partnered with Corporate Research Associates to ensure that our data collection methods are as valid as we can make them. To that end, here is how we will proceed.

Later on today, I will be sending out a generic e-mail to the reps, who will then forward it on to you. Contained in that e-mail will be a link to a google form.

The form will ask you to input a valid e-mail address, which will be collected ONLY by your local presidents. These e-mail are part of the validity check, and are necessary to ensure our data is solid. As well, every e-mail will be entered into a draw for a $25.00 gift card. (There are 20 available!)

PLEASE DO NOT USE THE EMPLOYER’S E-MAIL!

Once you have filled in your e-mail, and click submit, you will be taken to the link for the survey. The survey should take about 15 minutes, if not less, to complete. The survey is anonymous, and is open until November 9th. We hope to release the result back to the membership by November 13th.

In order for our data to be as accurate as possible, we need approximately 400 members to complete the survey.
