Hi everyone,

Just a reminder to schools that the NSTU Presidential election is set for May 25th, so schools and work sites should start to see their voting packages arrive this week, if they have not already. Please remind Admin in the office to check their community mailboxes. Also if your school does not receive your voting packages, please contact the REO for the election, Duncan Cameron,  by email at to have that rectified. Duncan will also be available the day of the election for schools and sites that may need cards. 

Please see the Announcements below and the time sensitive dates for each initiative from our local committees. Please note the deadline for the Local Bursary of Friday May 20th, 2022. Any questions for the Local Bursary can be emailed to the local’s treasurer, Jodie MacIlreith at 



Staffing Information Session Designed for Newer Teachers

There will be an NSTU information session coming up soon which is designed to help newer teachers make well informed decisions heading into the Teacher Placement Process (TPP) and the Term Teaching posting rounds.  This session will clarify the various types of employment status that teachers may attain on their way to a permanent contract.  It will also cover some key information regarding teacher qualifications, as well as other related topics.

So, who should attend this session?  I would say it would be most beneficial to teachers who currently have term recall status or aggregate status.  Anyone who anticipates going to TPP will certainly benefit from this session as well including anyone who is declared surplus at their school.  It would also be a good session for substitute teachers.

So, if you or someone you know would want to attend this session, please share the details below:

Where: Online—Zoom platform

Who: This session is being led by the three Local Presidents in Metro but there will also be NSTU Staff Officers on the Zoom call.

Reps and Equity

The Reps and Equity Committee have booked a new date for the No Girls Allowed book talk!  We are super excited to let you know that it is indeed happening on Thursday, May 26, 2022. If you wish to receive a copy of the novel and participate in the book talk, please fill out the link below. The committee will be in touch soon about getting the novel to you.



The Nominations Committee has opened nominations for the following local executive positions.  County members can submit their nomination using the Google Form link included:

The Nominations Committee has also opened applications for standing committees for next year (2022-23).  The Google Form for this application is below. NOTE: all current members of a standing committee must re-apply to be considered for committee selection for next year.

The deadline for all forms will close on Friday, May 20 at 4 pm.  Local Executive elections will be held at the June 8 AGM.  Standing committees for next year will be announced at the June 8 AGM as well.


CONTACT 2022 Conference

The CONTACT Conference is a joint project of the NBTA, PEITF, NSTU, NLTA and the NTA. The
NSTU delegation will be formed using the following formula:

22 spaces for a representative from each NSTU Local (paid for by the Local)

The local will sponsor one delegate by random draw. Please send your name, school and confirm that you are an Halifax County local NSTU member to

Finance Committee

Halifax County Bursary is Now Open

Halifax County bursaries are given to the children/stepchildren of Halifax County Local members (not PSAANS members) who are currently (2021-22) teaching in a term or permanent position.  Applicants must be graduating from High School in June 2022. This bursary must be used for enrollment in secondary education in September 2022 and cannot be deferred to another school year. The amount received by each recipient will be dependent on how many applications are received in total. The deadline for application is Friday, May 20th, 2022.


Social Wellness Committee

The Social Wellness Committee has scheduled another sociable at Freeman’s, Sackville Drive, May 19, 3:30-6 . 

Please RSVP to ASAP to allow for staffing and food ordering.

Card Making Session

On May 17th, the Social Wellness Committee is hosting an all occasion card making session – a small group event (up to a maximum of 12). Contact for registration. No charge. Location: the Hfx. Co office, Brownlow Avenue, Dartmouth. We have two spots left!! First come, first served, so don’t delay! Time 6:30-8.

Retirement Ticket Drive News

Do you know a colleague who retired in 2021 or is  set to retire in June 2022? Do you want to attend the Hfx Co Retirement banquet to celebrate them?  This year the retirement banquet is going wireless!  Guest tickets are $55. Tickets can be accessed until May 31.

Also, many teachers have expressed they have significant barriers to carrying out their duties, so a section of the Working Conditions article is also attached. Teachers’ Provincial Agreement 2015-2019 (


59.05 A teacher who is required by the Principal to fill in when a substitute is not hired pursuant to Article 32.23 (Substitute Teachers) of this Agreement shall have the lost marking and preparation time rescheduled within ten (10) school days.


70.02 A teacher(s) who considers a system, policy or structure as causing a significant barrier(s) to carrying out the teacher’s duties may report the facts of the situation in writing to their immediate supervisor who shall investigate, take appropriate action, and report the response in writing within fifteen (15) days to the teacher(s).
