Check-In, Monday, April 27th

Good morning, County.

Last week was both a time of unprecedented sorrow and unprecedented strength. I know that many of you took time to honor and remember the victims of the horrific events that have scarred our province forever. In the midst of what can only be described as a surreal time, the events that shattered so many lives will undoubtedly haunt us for years to come. Certainly, the emergency alert that came across the airways on Friday evening gave us all a sense that what we view as normal has, once again, changed.

It is important that now, more than ever, in this time of isolation, that we look after ourselves and recognize that we may be struggling. In the midst of all the chaos and mayhem, it is easy to get caught up in the needs of others, and to perhaps lose sight of where we, ourselves, stand. If you find you are suffering, there are a number of ways to get help through the NSTU. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about how to access any of these services.

As we all attempt to move forward, I did want to share some positive news. I had mentioned a few weeks ago that your local executive had been looking for ways to help out some of the community groups that might find themselves particularly hard pressed during this time. As a follow up, I had wanted to let you know that donations were made to Bryony House and Phoenix House, both of whom do exceptional work. We will be meeting again in May to look at our budget and finances and may consider making further contributions.

Finally, on a more traditional note, I also did want to let everyone know that HRCE is in the process of putting the final touches on their plans for this year’s staffing season. A memo on how this year’s process will transpire will be coming out soon, if it hasn’t already. The plan is to take care of staffing electronically, which will obviously be a first. If you are planning on applying for positions, you must ensure that your resume is complete and has all your qualifications listed.

That’s it for this week, County. Stay safe.
